Canvo™ Care and Maintenance

Canvo™ tents and tarps require an additional step to be waterproof. If you plan to use your Canvo™ tent or tarp in the rain, please follow the steps below. If you never camp in the rain, you can use your Canvo™ tent or tarp as is, right out of the box.

Weathering (Seasoning)

“Weathering” or “Seasoning” is the process of making the Canvo™ material wet and then allowing it to dry. This tightens the Canvo™ weave, making the fabric waterproof.

1. On a warm sunny day, pitch the tent or tarp in a dry, open area where it will be in the sun for several hours. Close all zippers and vents.

2. Drench the tent with a garden hose.

3. If the tent is dirty from previous use, use a soft-bristle brush and mild soap to spot clean dirt, debris, and dust from the fabric. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Avoid high-pressure hoses which can damage fibers.

4. Allow the tent to dry completely, inside and out.

At this point, your Canvo™ tent or tarp will stand up to most foul weather. However, if you anticipate using your Canvo™ tent or tarp in extreme foul weather, additional waterproofing may be useful.

Waterproofing Treatment

Silicone-based sprays are easy to apply and retain maximum breathability (e.g., Nikwax, Kiwi Camp Dry). Canvas wax (e.g., Otter Wax) gives a more traditional, heavy-duty finish (less breathable but highly water-resistant).

For Silicone-Based Sprays:

1. Complete the weathering process as described above.

2. Shake the can or bottle well.

3. Spray evenly over the entire exterior surface of the canvas, maintaining about 6–8 inches of distance.

4. Use a sponge or soft cloth to smooth out drips and ensure even coverage.

5. Let the tent dry for 12–24 hours, depending on humidity.

For Wax-Based Treatments:

1. Complete the weathering process as described above.

2. Rub the wax bar directly onto the fabric in even strokes.

3. Use a clean cloth or your hands (with gloves) to work the wax into the fibers.

4. Use a heat gun or hairdryer on low setting to melt the wax into the canvas.

5. Let the tent sit for several hours to cure and then inspect for any missed spots.

Maintenance Tips

Renew weathering and waterproofing every 1–2 years, or after deep cleaning.

Always store the tent completely dry to prevent mold and mildew.

Mend tears while they’re still small. If you don’t, they will certainly grow.

When camping on abrasive ground, always use a ground sheet.

Do not leave your tent or tarp pitched for long periods (many days or weeks) in strong direct sunlight.
